Project Description

Chilean Solar Energy Research Center, SERC Chile, is a Fondap program of the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (Conicyt), whose objective is to become a world leader in scientific research on solar energy, with special emphasis on developing the potential of the Atacama Desert of our country. The main support for this project is the vast potential of the Norte Grande for the production of electricity, heat and light based on solar energy, and for photovoltaic and thermal applications, thanks to its high levels of radiation and clarity indexes, which make this area an exceptional space for the study, development and testing of new technologies.

Since its creation, this solar energy center has organized its work into six lines of research, on which academics from different universities and disciplines depend: 1) Solar energy in industry and mining; 2) High-power electrical systems with solar energy penetration; 3) Solar energy coordination systems for rural and urban communities; 4) Solar energy storage; 5) Solar water treatment; 6) Economic, social and regulatory aspects for the development of solar energy.
